Spam Musubi
Spam Musubi is a popular snack or party food composed of Spam, rice and wrapped together with nori. Spam Musubi is a local favorite in Hawaii and I would say, also here in California. It is a tasty snack that is easy to make and affordable. There are many ways you can make this, but here is a simple version.
Ingredients
- 1 can (12 ounces) Spam, cut into 8 slices
- 3 cups calrose rice or short grain rice
- 4 sheet nori roasted seaweed
- 1/3 cup glazed or regular soy sauce
- 3 tablespoon sugar
- 1 teaspoon cooking oil
- water
Instructions (see above step by step picture)
- Cook rice in 3 cups of water. Add more water if needed.
- Combine soy sauce and sugar. Mix well and add spam to marinate for 20-30 minutes.
- Fry spam in medium heat till brownish color. Add remaining marinade mixture to the pan, bring to a quick boil then remove pan from heat.
- Place a sheet of nori flat in a clean surface. Place Musubi mold on top of the nori and fill with 3/4 cup with cooked rice. Press down firmly and add a piece of spam. Scoop 3/4 cup of cooked rice again to the Musubi mold and press down firmly again.
- Remove Musubi mold and fold over the nori. Seal the nori with a little water if needed.
- Repeat instruction 4 and 5 to use up the rest of ingredients.
- Cut into serving size and serve with hot sauce or teriyaki sauce. Enjoy
TIP:
Check your local Japanese store or Amazon for the Musubi press mold. I bought mine at our local Daiso Japan store for $1.50. If you don't have the Musubi press molder, you can use the spam can by cutting off its top and bottom. It will work well too.
